Decide which is bigger: a half or a quarter?
Key ideas
Quarter versus half
A quarter is smaller than a half, because splitting a whole into four parts makes each piece thinner than splitting it into two.
Halves of numbers
Sharing equally between two people gives each person half, so half of 12 is 6. Finding halves is really division by 2.
Key term — Half: One of two equal parts of a whole. Two halves make the whole again.
Four friends share a cake equally. The cake weighs 800 g. How much does each friend get?
Four equal parts means each friend gets one quarter. Divide the whole: 800 ÷ 4 = 200. Check: 4 × 200 = 800 ✓.
Answer: 200 g each — one quarter of the cake.
- Calling unequal pieces halves The pieces must be exactly the same size for halves, quarters or any fraction to be correct.
- Thinking 1/4 is bigger than 1/2 The larger denominator means smaller pieces — fourths are thinner than halves.
Practice
9 — 18 ÷ 2 = 9.
1 — a quarter is 1 out of 4 equal parts.
1/2 — two parts make bigger pieces than four.
12 — 24 ÷ 2 = 12.
